Who is a physiotherapist??What is a physios work??Will the common Indian population ever consider physios as important individuals instead of just mere massagers(which we are not)??Why such a lot of hullabaloo arises for adding Dr. as a prefix??There are so many questions which need to be answered...
Myself being a physio, I really find it unfortunate to talk about the pathetic condition that we are going through in the society. To add to this is the "still waiting for a council to be formed" thought which again frustrates being in this profession.Being a physiotherapist matters a lot...A doctor or a surgeon or a nurse, I wish if they had the basic sense to understand what a physio can do.Physiotherapy is a health care profession which sees human movement as central to the health and well being of individuals. We are skilled to use manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, electro-physical modalities keeping in mind the anatomical, physiological n bio mechanical principles of the body. Just like other degree and bachelor courses physiotherapy or a physiotherapist is the one who holds a bachelors degree of four and a half years studying the human body(especially the bone, joint and muscle system). We also assess patients by using various tests to find out any muscle, bone, ligament or nerve involved. Its not only by what the doctors advice we act.Every patient is treated after thorough assessment and then a treatment protocol is planned out according to the condition of the patient whether acute or chronic. The position of physios is very very poor in India.Physios are not treated the way they deserve to be.Physios should get the rights if not diagnosing a particular problem, but to allow them to carry on with their treatment protocol the way they find it appropriate for their patient. Depending on the doctors to refer a case to them and to worsen the situation even more by treating a patient the way doctors demand...thatz really pathetic even after studying for so many years n getting a bachelors degree just for nothing in return. If doctors had to plan a treatment protocol for the physios then there was no need for physiotherapy as a profession to exist. Doctors can themselves take up the job. Then what are we slogging so many years for?? Don't we have our own reputation? Any unskilled common man can do passive movements or active assisted or mobilisation just by watching it. But to do these things with skill after understanding the basic bio mechanical n physiological principles acting on the body you do need a physiotherapist and nobody can take a physios place for the same.
For the current scenario of physios who is suppose to be blamed? Is it the government for depriving us of a council..or is it WE-PHYSIOS who are still not interested in taking the initiative to fight for it n waiting till it gets formed on its own?? I guess the second one would me more apt if we are talking about the attitude of the physios passing out. It is our right to have a council. If nurses can have and if any other paramedic faculty can have it then why should we suffer?
Physiotherapy like any other medical profession has bachelors, masters and Phd programmes. Then why are we lagging behind in forming a council of our own? IAP is trying their level best but they have been ONLY trying from so many years with diminished hopes to survive. Nothing is working. All physios should come together and fight for the safety of our profession in the coming future. Or else I fear we will be the only ones without proper pay scale and without a reputation just working under someone for the sake of working or rather for our mental satisfaction to cover up the money spend to attain a degree. We should fight for an open referral system and a council and try to create awareness regarding our profession in all possible means. LETZ JOIN HANDS TOGETHER AND MOVE AHEAD FOR A BRIGHT AND A BETTER FUTURE!!!!!!
